Gallic bull warrior

Streptococcus gallolyticus, formerly known as Streptococcus bovis, is a Gram-positive coccus that is a normal inhabitant of the human gastrointestinal tract.

🔗 The bull head ('bovis'), Gallic helmet ('gallolyticus'), and crab emblem (carcinoma) anchor the organism's name to its key clinical association.

🔬 Identification

  • •GPC in chains, catalase –, group D.
  • •Bile-esculin POSITIVE.
  • •Does NOT grow in 6.5% NaCl (vs Enterococcus, which does).

🩺 Disease & association

  • •Subacute bacterial endocarditis.
  • •Bacteremia/endocarditis is strongly associated with COLORECTAL CARCINOMA → do a colonoscopy.

🧠 Mnemonics

Bovis in the blood = cancer in the colonS. gallolyticus (bovis) bacteremia → screen for colorectal cancer.
No salt = not EnterococcusBile-esculin + but NaCl-negative distinguishes it from Enterococcus.

🩺 Classic boards tip-off

Older adult with subacute endocarditis and S. bovis/gallolyticus bacteremia → next step is colonoscopy to rule out colon cancer.
