🔬 Identification

  • •GPC in chains, catalase –.
  • •β-hemolytic, bacitracin-RESISTANT.
  • •CAMP test POSITIVE (arrowhead with S. aureus).
  • •Hydrolyzes hippurate.

🦠 Disease

  • •Neonatal meningitis, pneumonia, and sepsis (leading causes in newborns).
  • •In adults: postpartum endometritis, UTI, diabetic skin/soft tissue infections.

🛡️ Prevention

  • •Universal rectovaginal screening at 35–37 weeks gestation.
  • •Intrapartum penicillin prophylaxis for colonized or high-risk mothers.
