Every NBME Form Ranked: Objective AI Difficulty vs. Subjective Student Consensus
We graded every USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK practice form on two scales: Objective Difficulty (reading length, multi-step reasoning hops, and curriculum match) versus Subjective Student Consensus (how brutal the form feels on Reddit & SDN).
Quick Cheat Sheet: Modern Forms by Difficulty Tier (Click Any Form to Inspect)
Sorted from hardest score-droppers to fairest baselinesHighest 3-step trap rates or harshest curves. Expect 5–8 pt dips; don't panic.
Longer modern stems (78–96w) and multi-system reasoning. Best late-prep predictors.
High core-curriculum match (78–82%) and fair curves. Ideal for early- to mid-prep.

NBME 33
Takeaway: Consensus hardest modern NBME on r/step1: 7.5% 3-hop rate, 72.9% core curriculum match rate, and 73.2% AI baseline reasoning score.
Why Form 34 Has 90-Word Stems Yet Feels Fairer Than Form 33
- • NBME 34 has the longest stems ever (~90 words) and highest 2+ step reasoning rate (86.2%).
- • Yet students rate NBME 33 (93 / S-Tier) much harder than Form 34 (78 / A-).
- • Why: Form 33 packs 7.5% 3-step traps, whereas 92.5% of Form 34's concepts repeat topics already tested on Forms 31–33.
Why NBME 25 & 28 (and Legacy 22) Cause Sudden Score Drops
- • Shorter stems do not mean easier questions: NBME 25 (~67 words) has an 8.5% 3-step chain rate (highest of modern forms).
- • NBME 28 (~69 words) packs more competing clinical clues per stem (4.66) and lower curriculum match (76.3%) than Forms 26 or 29.
- • Tip: Start dedicated with NBME 26 or 29 instead of taking Form 25 cold.
Clean Baselines (10 & 11) vs. 50/50 Management Traps (9, 12 & 15)
- • NBME 10 & 11 are the cleanest baselines (119–124 words; 81.4% core curriculum match on Form 11).
- • NBME 9 & 12 feel +14 to +16.5 pts harder than their objective score due to 50/50 next-step dilemmas.
- • NBME 14 & 15 are the best late-stage predictors (Form 15 tests newer QI, ethics, and second-line therapy).
Recommended Practice Exam Order (Week-by-Week)
USMLE Step 1 Order (Forms 25–34 + Free 120)
- 1. Early Baseline: NBME 26 or 29— Highest curriculum match (82.1% & 75.7%) and fair curves.
- 2. Mid-Prep Audit: NBME 27 → 28 → 30 — Exposes 50/50 distractor traps while you still have weeks to remediate weak systems.
- 3. Long-Stem Transition: NBME 31 → 32 — Steps up stem length from ~78 to ~84 words.
- 4. Final 2 Weeks: NBME 33 → 34 → Free 120 (2026)— Review Form 33's 3-step concepts thoroughly, then ride Form 34 and the Free 120 into test day.
USMLE Step 2 CK Order (Forms 9–15 + Free 120)
- 1. Clean Baseline: NBME 10 or 11 — Shortest stems (119–124w) and highest core prep alignment (81.4%).
- 2. Mid-Prep Trap Inoculation: NBME 9 & 12— Great learning tools; don't overreact to their harsher curves.
- 3. Modern Chart Conditioning: NBME 13 → 15 — 133-word chart stems on Form 13 and newer QI/ethics phrasing on Form 15.
- 4. Final Week Predictor: NBME 14 + Step 2 Free 120 — Most balanced score predictor + 144.5-word test-day pacing rehearsal.

How We Graded the Forms (Without Storing Any Proprietary Exam Content)
1. Objective Difficulty (0–100): Pacing, Hops & Curriculum Graph
Computed across our three-node AI reasoning cluster and open medical curriculum knowledge graph using de-identified student study-session pacing logs and concept-level topic mappings:
- Multi-Step Reasoning (28 pts): Share of tested concepts requiring 2-step or 3-step clinical deduction vs. 1-step recall.
- Reading & Pacing Load (24 pts): Estimated from student time-per-item telemetry and word-length distributions (~38w on early forms to ~90–144w on modern forms).
- Core Curriculum Match (20 pts): Retrieval-augmented concept matching against our open medical curriculum graph and the public USMLE® Content Outline.
- Unstated Diagnosis & Clue Filtering (28 pts): Frequency of indirect mechanism/management lead-ins and competing differential findings per stem.
2. Subjective Consensus (0–100) & Copyright Independence
Aggregated from public student score-progression spreadsheets, post-exam polls, and discussion threads on r/step1, r/Step2, and Student Doctor Network (SDN), weighting reported score-drop frequency and perceived curve harshness.
